Family Crashes on way home from All American Soap Box Derby - Tire blew out on their vehicle at about 60 mph and caused them to roll several times including the trailer full of their racecars. They are heading to the impound yard to salvage clothing and items from the vehicle, will spend the night at a hotel, and tomorrow they will assess the needs to get the contents of the trailer home and figure out a plan. The vehicle is totaled and presumably the trailer too. The condition of the contents of the trailer are unknown. The main thing is that they are all fine and thank all of you...more »

I will be writning about the timers used at local tracks soon, but here is the history of timers used in Soap Box Derby. Akron Timer Used Now *The Origin of the Timer Swap* In 1976, in the small village of Elk Grove, about 24 miles south of Sacramento, California, Earle Blair started working on a timer system to determine the distance between two Soapbox Derby Racers at the finish line, and eliminate the difference between lanes and wheels. The NDR Nationals, and some local rally's before this, had been using a photo to show the difference between the two racers in the first phase ...more »

The headline read: Lindsey sisters dominate October two-day Rally. But a few other racers had a great weekend. "Andy Harding was also a double winner in the Super Stock Division over the weekend and just missed equaling Kathryn Lindsey for top overall weekend honors as he won both the Double and Single elimination races on Saturday and then finished as the runner-up in the morning Double Elimination race to Brian Morrie and the afternoon Single Elimination race to Joshua Young on Sunday." [image: All American Soapbox Derby, AASBD, Torque, Tampa Bay Soap Box Derby] Soap Box Derby expert, Paul Gale wants you to know this about torque settings on Soap Box Derby Cars: Torque Wrenches are used to apply inch-pounds and foot-pounds of torque. Torque wrenches are used to torque kingpins. The common range of torque wrenches used in SBD car assembly are 30 to 150 in.-lbs. or 5 to 75 ft.-lbs. Remember, Torque should always be applied slowly and evenly. The more resistance felt when applying torque, the slower torque should be applied. For more accurate torque application, the fi...more »
A frequent question arises on how the wheels for the All American Soap Box Derby are grouped, calibrated, and boxed. Then gets a sticker put on it with a sequential number, rotation direction and AASBD sticker. If you look at an AA championship wheel, you will see what I'm talking about. The wheel is then run on the calibration table and the information is recorded electronically. The wheels are then placed back in a box and a number is written INSIDE th...more »
Racing in soap box derby is usually pretty close to straight down the track but whenever the conditions change everything is different. When summer turns into winter everyone puts on the layers and ski jackets. The kids in the stock and super stock don't have a problem for the most part but for people, like me, in masters it is a whole different story. When you are in masters you don't have a whole lot of room in general, but our shoulders are especially cramped. Just two long-sleeved shirts give me no room to move and bend the body outward. That means that all of us have to layer up...more »

Readers have been concerned about the high torque settings discussed this month. Derby Expert Paul Gale continues his discussion about torque mania. The function of all tension bolts, such as the Grade 8 used as a kingpin bolt, is to stretch. They are meant to be stretched. The bolt is elastic up to a point.Applying an appropriate torque to the kingpin nut stretches the bolt a very small amount. When the torque is removed the bolt returns to its original length. When a SBD car rolls down the hill, the kingpin is subjected to dynamic load which causes the bolt to stretch-and-return ...more »
Paul Gale Appears as a Guest Courtesy of Our Friends at Zero Error Racing. Grade 8 hex head bolts are designed for use in tension applications. They provide a clamp up force (like using a c-clamp). The 1/4 inch diameter bolt used for SBD kingpins is rated for a maximum torque of 200 inch pounds (16.7 foot pounds). Torque values are developed based upon the threads being absolutely dry – no lubricant. Any material (plating, liquid, or wax) applied to the bolt threads or nut threads, regardless of viscosity, will significantly alter the actual torque value achieved. A rough estimated...more »

"Maximum Potential Energy (PE) is obtained by correctly positioning the driver and added weight within the car. [image: All American Soap Box Derby Tampa Florida] Here is Derby Expert, Paul Gale's, first in a series of tips and explanations based on decades of gravity racing. "The force that propels a SBD car and driver down the track is gravity. The amount of force available, called Potential Energy, is determined by total weight of car and the vertical drop of that weight from start to finish. When the starting gate releases a car, it accelerates down the hill. While accelerating, the car’s Potential Energy (PE) is converted into Kinetic Energy (KE). The more efficiently PE is converted to K...more »

[image: Innovative Dynamics Gravity Sports]Thanks to Joe and Dave Gerardi for these thoughts Do it anyway Are you afraid that what you attempt might not work? You could very well be right -- it may not work. Go ahead and do it anyway. Go ahead and find out for yourself. Either it will work and you'll be successful, or it won't work and you'll learn something valuable. Even an unsuccessful attempt is much better than no attempt at all. Success is not a matter of getting it right every single time. Success comes from continuing to persist until you do get it right. Instead of para...more »

After resurrecting our first car from various locations in Florida, we turned to preparing both cars for the races next month in Akron. [image: Soap Box Derby Driver Wins Le Mans]My father and I were working at an endurance race called the 12 Hours of Sebring. That is the first race in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). We had obtained a pass that allowed us into a tent that served food for teams and drivers. After filling our plates with several delectables and treats, we took a seat. [image: Tallahassee Soap Box Derby Racing] Of the four races Race Driver William best finish was 3rd, not too bad for such a wet weekend. We do LOVE the new location. The track is straight, well defined and clean. There are nearby stores and restaurants and even a hotel within walking distance. There are trees for shade and very little weekend traffic. We also enjoy seeing the Canadian Geese each morning.
We had a great time at the Central Florida Holiday Rally held in Sanford Florida (December 27 and 28, 2008). Race driver William (Sonny) finished 8th, 6th, and 5th. Since this weekend only had three races, it was the perfect time for testing. One of the master's racers (Charlotte) was trying to determine which weight was optimum for her highschool science project. She did pretty well, went on to the regional fair.
[image: RVs In The Ground; one of the landmarks we look for and see on I-4]Sonny got two 6th place finishes in Sanford this weekend (November 11, 2008). Casey described going to Sanford Rally, "just like a day in the park." The Central Florida race in Sanford has a permanent track in a city park. There are clean bathrooms, a pavilion, swing sets, play grounds and a vendor selling good food.

[image: Rally Tallahassee October 2008]We went to our first Tallahassee Regional Race for the weekend of October 11th and 12th, 2008. The race was actually held in Cairo GA. Normally our whole family participates in all of the Soap Box Derby Racing but Daddy couldn't come this time so we asked for help from the other families. The two families from Sanford and several families from Tallahassee were happy to help. Racing is not just fun it is hard.
